A Gift from the Heart

What do you give a special man in your life who thinks he has everything? If I ask my farmer what he wants for birthday or holiday gift, I never get an answer. Over the seven years we've been together, I've learned to watch his movements when we are in a farm or hardware store. If I see him intently looking at something, I secretly act like I'm texting someone and record his wish list into my smart phone so I remember it for the next holiday. Still, it always seems like I can never get it right!

Valentine's Day would be different this year. Recently, I attended the Women Managing the Farm Conference in Wichita, KS. On the Silent Auction table, was a book that had been advertised on RFD TV:

I admit, I had second thoughts. Duh...It's a book. He hasn't picked up a book since college (minus the seed catalogs and equipment manuals). But, I felt intrigued...I began to look through the book. And began to think that he might...just might...actually like it!

The contents of American Farmer is mostly photographs (so not much reading involved!). Still pictures, taken by the expert photographer Paul Mobley, showing emotion, rage, happiness, and pride. There are pictures that show loss and gain. Faces of Agriculture that tell stories of their experiences on the farm.

The featured farmers are from all over the United States. There are actually several farmers from Alaska - I will never fully understand how they survive the winters. But, their location allows them to wake up to a views that would take your breath away.

There are pictures that show a farmer's sensitive side - their love towards living creatures.

And their Wild Side.

There are young farmers excited for the future.

And old farmers reminiscing about all the good times.

Some farmers have thousands of animals on their farm while others just have a few.

There are pictures of farmers completing everyday tasks.

Farmers enjoying a visit with their neighbors even when they have so many things to do.

And they enjoy the fruits of their labor with their family and workers.

Being profitable makes a farmer hopeful for the future.

When I returned home from the Women Managing the Farm conference, I brought American Farmer to my husband. His eyes lit up when he saw what it was! As we looked through it and read a few of their stories together, I knew I had made the right choice for a Valentine's Day gift. This gift was not anything he could use or make, but the pictures and farmers' stories were things that he could relate to. He knows the struggles, joy, and pride embraced by American Farmer's faces. He enjoyed looking at each page and finding the name, location, and what the farmer raised raised on his/her farm. Success is mine!

I also enjoyed looking at American Farmer. The stories, pictures, and quotes made me giggle, laugh, and even tear up a bit. Looking through the book reminded me that we all need to remember to thank farmers for all they do. With all the regulations, cutting, and anti-agriculture activists out there, farming has become a thankless job. Don't these people realize that without farmers, they would have no food? What do they expect to eat?

Farmers know how to take care of their land, the environment, and their animals. Agriculture is the most honest way of life. And it's a life I would never ever want to leave.

Monday Motivation - Forgetting something?

Happy Day After the Grammy's Monday!! Wow! What a show! Complete with controversial commercials. Since it is Motivational Monday, I'm not going to blog about the commercials or the outfits or Adele TODAY. The most meaningful part of the show for me, which I will talk about, was the Rhinestone Cowboy himself, Glen Campbell.

Glen Travis Campbell was born on April 22, 1936, on a family farm in Billstown, Arkansas. The son of Wesley, a sharecropper, and Carrie Dell, Campbell was one of 12 children. The family was largely impoverished - all the Campbell children pitched in to help pick cotton - but extremely musical, and Campbell showed musical promise early on. At the age of four, his father bought him a $5 Sears and Roebuck guitar; within a few years, Campbell was appearing as a paid act and performing guest spots on local radio stations.

In his career, Glen seemed to have it all. He was handsome and talented. An actor and a singer. He had some great times and some dark times, due to alcohol. He was even a friend of King Elvis Presley!

Sadly, Glen is now suffering from Alzheimer's Disease - A horrible disease causing the brain to forget. He made the announcement in June of 2011. He was beginning to forget words to his songs, repeating things he had said before, and even forgetting the names of his children! What would it be like to forget who your children are? Or your spouse? Some days with Alzheimer's are good, but some are not. However, Glen has vowed to go one one final tour to share his wonderful country hits to the world.

Back in November during the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, an extremely short tribute was made to Glen. He was there, sitting in the audience next to his lovely wife. While watching Vince, Brad, and Keith sing his hit songs, it seemed to me that Glen was trying to mouth the words but may have had trouble remembering some of them. He also seemed a little disoriented when he stood up to go on stage. His wife firmly, but softly led him in the right direction.

Last night's tribute to Glen at the Grammy's was different. As one of the final acts of the night, a tribute to him was made by Taylor Swift and songs of his were sung by The Band Perry and Blake Shelton. Glen actually sang his song that bares his nickname: Rhinestone Cowboy. He clearly was singing. Hit every note and word perfectly! He did not seem disoriented at all during his performance. I was so inspired and happy for him! Such a different man than I saw in November!

Glen is living his life to the fullest. He is still singing and touring because he knows someday that he will no longer be able to use his talent due to Alzheimer's Disease. I think the best thing about this tour is that he has his three children in his band traveling with him!

He's going through probably the most difficult barrier in his lifetime, but Glen Campbell has still got it. Though he may not remember EVERY word of his songs, he is still one of the best guitar players in the world. He has chosen to use his talent to live his life and takes one day at a time. Today, take some time to think about what barriers you will have this week. What talents do you have that you can use to get around them to achieve your goals?

Hope everyone has a great Monday!

H-S-WHO?-S???

We all see the sappy commercials on television featuring sad looking cats and dogs. Those commercials that tear at most peoples' heartstrings (and just plain make me want to throw the TV out the window) are sponsored by a dangerous organization known as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Many people I talk to aren't aware of the HSUS or their motives against Animal Agriculture and against owning animals as pets. HSUS does NOT support the local farmers or the local county Humane Societies. These videos explain more about their agendas:

Abolishing the ownership of all pets:

Abolishing Animal Agriculture:

I can't even bare to think of a life without having a big juicy hamburger or steak or chicken to eat every day. And I can't even bare to think of a life without these:

Sleepy Scout & Sage
So, how can they do this? Well, money is power and money is what they have a LOT of! The video (Courtesy of Missouri Farmers Care) below shows just how much of their budget is spent where and how they plan to destroy animal agriculture - Kinda Scary!

So, what can we do to protect our way of life? Simply, tell our story! To school children, to town folks, even to animal rights groups. People NEED to know that Animal Agriculture is needed for our growing nation to survive! Pets are needed for the animal lover's well being and sanity and pets need US to take care of them. It's apparent that the members of this organization never knew what it was like to have so many stray dogs and cats dumped at the corner! It is so important for people to know the truth. Tell them!!

Also, HSUS is sneaky with their fundraising due to their misleading tactics. Those commercials you see on television have made them their millions that they need to reach their goal of putting animal agriculture out of business. I do not support businesses and celebrities who support HSUS. Because, by supporting HSUS, they don't the farmers & ranchers & pet owners like Troy and me.

After Troy's video made it on YouTube and exposed HSUS's motives, YellowTail Wine actually withdrew their sponsorship! Other sponsors have also withdrawn their support! Here is a list of businesses and celebrities currently supporting HSUS:

Wow, there are several of them I watch regularly that I will no longer be supporting! No more Desparate Housewives! I was so looking forward to the finale!

Here is one final video featuring Missouri hog producer Chris Chinn, talking about a current issue involving HSUS first hand:

So, when you grab your puppy for a cuddly hug or go out to hay your cows tonight, just keep in mind that we are all under attack and may not even know it. It is our responsibility to tell the truth about agriculture and spread the truth around so that the people of this nation does not believe the lies of HSUS.

Have a great HUMP Day!
